Unfortunately, deciding you want to make a website in no ways guarantees the success of that website. There are many website design mistakes that newbies make that significantly hinder their success. In some cases a mistake may slow them down, while in other cases a mistake may bring them to a screeching halt or never allow them to even get started. Avoid these four common website design mistakes that newbies often make.
1. The first mistake starts with the visual look and feel of your website. When people first started making websites in the mid 90s, common elements included lots of fancy fonts, little animated graphics all over the screen, background music and lots of contrasting bright colors. Just because it was acceptable at one time, does not mean it's acceptable anymore! All of the above are mistakes that are going to cause people to immediately click the back button when they land on your page. Go for the completely opposite side of the spectrum. Keep it simple and try to be clean and pleasing to the eyes.
2. Another mistake of website design that newbies make is that they assume if they build a website, visitors will automatically come. They forget to pay attention to the crucial element of online marketing. You need to incorporate SEO techniques into your site's content and structure to enable you to draw visitors in through the search engines. People don't just magically find websites. They find them mostly through search engines that list particular websites highly. Start learning SEO and incorporating it into your website design if you want to see a substantial amount of traffic.
3. You don't want to rely too heavily on images either. Images can cause several problems. To begin with, depending on their size and file type, they may take a long time to load. Additionally, people use all sorts of different browsers as well as mobile devices to get around on the Internet now. Large image files can completely disrupt the rest of your website if they are viewed on browsers of various sizes and capabilities. Another downside to images is that the text you write on an image isn't seen by the search engines and can't be used for SEO. To circumvent this with the images you do include, add the ALT="alternate text you want seen" tag to your image tag.
4. One of the most common problems with website design that newbies make is designing the site from their own perspective rather than the perspective of their visitors, prospects and customers. This can be called the "Me, me, me" syndrome. You want your site to be appealing to the people you are reaching out to. This means forgetting about yourself and your company and providing the information that people want to see, in the way that they want to see it.
Newbies make many common mistakes with their website design. But if you learn some of the most common ones before you get started, you'll be able to avoid them from the beginning and build a more effective online presence.
